Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and to recognize and influence the emotions of others. It is one of the most important predictors of success and wellbeing in life, and it is a skill that can be developed and improved with practice.

In the context of spiritual development, emotional intelligence is not just a practical skill – it is a spiritual one. The ability to be present with our emotions, to understand them, and to respond to them wisely, is at the heart of what it means to be a spiritually mature human being.

The Four Components of Emotional Intelligence

Psychologist Daniel Goleman, who popularized the concept of emotional intelligence, identifies four key components:

  • Self-awareness: The ability to recognize and understand your own emotions.
  • Self-management: The ability to regulate your emotions and impulses.
  • Social awareness: The ability to recognize and understand the emotions of others.
  • Relationship management: The ability to use emotional understanding to manage relationships effectively.

How Emotional Intelligence Supports Spiritual Development

Spiritual development requires emotional intelligence. Here’s why:

  • Self-awareness is foundational to spiritual growth. We cannot change what we don’t see. The ability to honestly observe our emotional patterns – our triggers, our defenses, our habitual reactions – is essential for spiritual work.
  • Self-management allows us to respond rather than react. On the spiritual path, we are constantly being asked to meet difficult situations with equanimity and wisdom. This requires the ability to pause, regulate our emotional response, and choose a wise course of action.
  • Social awareness cultivates compassion. When we can truly feel what others are feeling, we naturally respond with greater empathy and care. This is the foundation of spiritual community and service.
  • Relationship management allows us to create and sustain the kinds of relationships that support our growth – relationships characterized by honesty, mutual respect, and genuine care.

Developing Emotional Intelligence on the Spiritual Path

The Higher Self Yoga teachings offer a range of practices for developing emotional intelligence. These include meditation, which builds self-awareness and self-regulation; journaling, which helps us process and understand our emotional patterns; and reflective practices that help us develop greater empathy and social awareness.

One of the most powerful ways to develop emotional intelligence is to regularly connect with your Higher Self. The Higher Self is not subject to the reactive patterns of the ego – it sees clearly, feels deeply, and responds wisely. By learning to access the perspective of the Higher Self, we gradually develop the emotional intelligence that characterizes spiritual maturity.
