The Connection Between Working with the Heart and Transformation

The Heart as the Starting Point of True Transformation
True transformation begins in the heart. While the intellect can guide us to knowledge, it is the heart—the energetic center of compassion, bravery, and spiritual longing—that allows us to embody that knowledge and become who we are meant to be.
In contrast, ego desires operate from the lower nature. They seek gratification, validation, and separation. Heart-centered consciousness, on the other hand, seeks connection, wholeness, and unity with the divine.
To begin the journey of authentic spiritual growth, one must make the conscious choice to activate and work with the energies of the heart. This is not a sentimental journey. It is a process of transformation, where each step forward into the heart requires courage, humility, and the willingness to transcend old patterns and attachments.
Understanding the Seven Heart Energies
The heart is not a single-note instrument, rather, it is a radiant center through which seven distinct spiritual energies flow. Each of these energies offers a unique path to transformation and deepening self-awareness.
1. Love Energy
This is the most accessible and familiar energy, which comes in two forms: personal love and disidentified love.
Personal love is rooted in the desire body. It can open the heart—but if clung to, it can also limit spiritual growth.
Disidentified love, by contrast, refines the subtle body. It allows us to care deeply without attachment or projection. It is the form of love that uplifts, transforms, and brings us closer to our Higher Self.
2. Wisdom Energy
Wisdom energy is born through the union of heart and the Higher Mind. One without the other creates imbalance. The mind receives insight, but it is the heart that renders it meaningful.
In her works on intricacies and energies of the heart, Higher Self Yoga founder Nanette V. Hucknall gives an example of this union:
“You meditate on the concept of God Consciousness and receive the thought, ‘It is the source of all life.’ As you place that thought into your heart, a feeling arises—’The source is pure energy.’”
“This deepens your understanding – and connects thought with lived experience,” Hucknall explains.

3. Healing Energy
Healing energy always flows through the heart, whether through hands-on practice or distant transmission. This energy can be warm or cold, depending on its source, and it has the power to shift not just the physical state but the consciousness of the recipient.
4. Creative Energy
Creative energy comes from the Feminine Principle and flows through the heart. It stimulates the senses and brings forth ideas, images, and expressions that feel divinely inspired—not ego-driven.
“Creative energy is full of vibration that stimulates the person’s senses and thinking,” says Hucknall. “It is a strong force that conveys ideas and heightens awareness to all possibilities.”
5. Motivational Energy
This is the energy of will—but not the will of the mind alone. It is the heart's will, aligned with higher purpose. When activated, it pushes us to complete soul-driven tasks, even when inertia or fear sets in.
6. Discrimination Energy
Spiritual discernment is one of the most underappreciated heart energies. Built over lifetimes, it allows us to sense the truth of people and situations with uncanny precision.
Perhaps you meet someone new and feel a subtle discomfort. Rather than dismissing it, you place the person’s image in your heart and ask: Is this feeling soul-based or conditioned? The heart always knows.
7. Divine Energy
This is the bliss energy, the rapture of union with the Source. It may come briefly and unexpectedly, but even a second of this energy can transform a lifetime.

The Lotus of the Heart: A Symbol for the Journey
Imagine the heart as a lotus blossom floating on water.
Its petals open to the sun, but its roots are embedded in the mud. This depicts the spiritual path. As the heart opens, you will encounter beauty, bliss, and higher awareness—but also the mud: your wounds, attachments, and lower desires.
The heart teaches us not to escape the mud but to integrate it. It is here that the battle between ego and Higher Self plays out—and through heart energy, it is here that the battle can be won.
Heart Energy in Action: A Reflective Practice
Exercise: Differentiating Personal and Disidentified Love
Before attempting this exercise, read through the questions carefully. Add or subtract steps as you feel called. Reflection is not rigid—it is responsive to your unique journey.
Journal Prompts:
- When I concentrate on my heart chakra, how do I experience it?
- Who do I feel the most heart energy toward, and why?
- What happens in my heart when I send love energy to others?
- How does irritation change my experience of love?
- Have I ever felt disidentified love? What did it feel like?
- How can I begin shifting personal love into disidentified love?
If some questions are difficult to answer, ask your Higher Self for help. This reflection is not about right answers—it’s about awakening your inner perception.
