Woman finds her intuition while meditating.

How deepening your connection to the Higher Self transforms mixed signals into clear inner guidance.

Why Intuition Can Feel Confusing

Intuition, which lives in the belly and the heart, is the innate, subtle wisdom within.

It is clear and unstained, however we can struggle with overthinking surrounding whether an inner message is intuition, fear, habit, or wishful thinking.

This mental noise coupled with habitual emotional reactions can mimic guidance, when in actuality the impersonations of intuition are rooted in conditioning.

You know, when your brain jumps in like:

  • “What if this is fear?”
  • “What if I’m making it up?”
  • “What if I just want this to be true?”

Without a strong and firmly established connection to the Higher Self, mixed signals create murky self-doubt rather than clarity. Discernment is key here:

“[It’s important to] learn the differences between the Higher Self and the other parts within you that try to camouflage the Higher Self.”

–Nanette V Hucknall, Higher Self Yoga Book II

In the HSY teachings, it is consistently emphasized that spiritual growth requires discernment and commitment to understanding one’s true nature.

This isn’t to condemn confusion: Doubt and fear are a part of learning—not signs of failure.

The Difference Between Intuition and Personality Reactions

There are clear differentiations that can be made between intuition and personality-based reactions.

Personality-driven signals include:

  • Urgency

  • Fear-based pressure

  • Emotional reactivity

  • Desire for control

In contrast, Higher Self–guided intuition is:

  • Quiet

  • Steady

  • Non-dramatic

  • Clear without force

Furthermore, intuition does not argue or panic. It simply knows.

You may sense intuition as a subtle body sensation, an inner image, a symbolic impression, or a calm inner knowing.

Each person experiences the Higher Self uniquely.

How Intuition Speaks

According to Higher Self Yoga Book II, intuition may communicate through subtle impressions including visual, auditory, sensing/feeling, or a combination of sensory impressions.

Possible forms include:

  • A soft feeling in the heart center

  • A quiet thought that repeats gently

  • A symbolic image

  • A sense of expansion or contraction in the body

  • A dream or later insight that clarifies a decision

This subtlety requires attention and devotion to inner listening. Intuition rarely shouts.

Developing Discernment Through Relationship

Discernment is a skill that develops over time, and through relationship and inner trust. Trust in intuition therefore strengthens through conscious relationship with the Higher Self.

This relationship develops through:

  • Meditation

  • Heart-centered reflection

  • Journaling

  • Observing patterns without judgment

Discernment is like a the precision of a knife, which grows sharper when we consistently ask:

  • “Is this reaction or guidance?”

  • “Does this feel contracted or steady?”

  • “What does my Higher Self want me to see here?”

This is a practice–a skill honed with patience. Over time, clarity sharpens and becomes more immediate.

Practical Reflection: Strengthening Your Inner Compass

To strengthen your inner compass, consider this exercise adapted from HSY reflective practices:

  1. Sit quietly and bring awareness to the center of your chest.

  2. Recall a recent decision you questioned.

  3. Notice what felt urgent or emotionally charged.

  4. Then ask your Higher Self: “What is the deeper truth here?”

  5. Observe what arises—without forcing an answer.

  6. Journal the difference between reactive thoughts and steady impressions.

Continually anchor yourself in patience. Remember: Trust builds gradually.

When Intuition Becomes Trustworthy

It will become more and more clear that self-trust is building. Over time, as the relationship with the Higher Self deepens:

  • Self-doubt lessens.

  • Decisions feel calmer.

  • You move forward with greater confidence.

  • Peace replaces overthinking.

“The Higher Self will help you see and transmute those characteristics that impede your spiritual growth … and lead you into your true potential.”

This discovery of internal wholeness includes the integration of intuition and action
