The concept of the Higher Self is present in some form in almost all spiritual practices, including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and individualized practices separate from any major world religions.

At Higher Self Yoga, we see the Higher Self as an extension of yourself that is part of you and part of the Source—the ultimate higher power, the universal source of cosmic energy.

This energy links us to everyone and everything. We are all interconnected through shared energy. And as this universal energy—this higher consciousness—is contained within each one of us, we can use the Higher Self to access this universal wisdom and knowledge from within.

What would you want to know if you had access to this kind of knowledge? How would you use this information to transform yourself and the world around you?

Higher Self Yoga guides practitioners along this very journey and through countless ways that the Higher Self can be used to better your life.

Why Would I Want to Connect to My Higher Self?

Your Higher Self connects you to your best self and fullest potential. Many belief systems encourage practitioners to live their lives guided by their Higher Selves because of the consequences in their next life. However, most don’t also explore how living your life in unity with your Higher Self can transform your life as it stands today. We strive to do just that.

At Higher Self Yoga, our aim is enlightenment through self-awareness. Our mission is to teach you how to use the Higher Self to be the most fulfilled version of yourself in this life.

By connecting to the Higher Self you can discover who you are, what path you should be on, and where you’re meant to go. With It you can explore where your strengths lie and how to use them; how to identify the centermost challenges in your life and then how to overcome them; what work you should be doing to be most fulfilled; what mission you should dedicate your life to; the kinds of relationships you should be forging, and more.

And once you know who you are and where you want to be, you’ll likely find there is also a lot of work to be done to get to that place. This is a difficult but fulfilling process that can facilitate some of the most important and satisfying changes in your life.

In tandem with promoting spiritual connection, our practice also provides practitioners with practical tools, experiential exercises, and communication strategies from various schools of psychology to implement some of the changes they need to make in their life.

Every person’s journey is unique and we all have our own obstacles to overcome. Our blog touches on some of the most common struggles people face on their journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. We discuss topics like navigating difficult conversations and stopping negative thought patterns using the wisdom and guidance of your Higher Self.

But the first step is learning how to connect to your Higher Self.

Connecting with the Higher Self

Yoga is a method of union with the Source. Different styles of yoga use different methods to make this connection. Unlike many types of yoga we’re familiar with in the West, this doesn’t have to be a physical practice. Higher Self Yoga’s method for this union is through connection to and communication with the inner Higher Self.

This following is one technique in our yogic practice.

How to Connect to Your Higher Self

The path to your Higher Self lies within the heart center and the rational mind.

And while there are a number of ways to connect to your Higher Self, many beginners find it’s easiest to start first from the heart.

To open your heart center, relax, close your eyes, and with each breath try to feel the cares of the day dissolving into nothing. Try to let go of thoughts and feelings.

Focus your attention not where your heart itself is, but the center of the chest. Focus your awareness and notice any changes in sensation to signal that you’ve successfully made this connection.

These signs may feel subtle at first. It is normal for beginners to question whether they have made this connection, but you will gain confidence in time and with practice. Look for feelings of peace, warmth, light, expansion, or connection radiating from your chest center. Try to maintain that sensation throughout the session.

When you are connected to your heart, you can access your Higher Self. It helps some people to envision their Higher Self as a being that they can call upon. Others will just sense the arrival of a pure, positive energy or presence.

Once you’ve felt the arrival of the Higher Self, imagine a physical connection, linking your heart center to its heart center. Feel this energy flow through you.

At this point, you can ask your Higher Self questions or seek Its guidance. The answers you may receive may be in the form of thoughts, feelings, symbols, or a sense of knowing. The answers you seek may be delayed and come in the form of a dream or reach you at a later time when you are ready to receive them.

It’s important to note that things like negative energy, ego, or your personal desires can be mistaken as answers from your Higher Self. Therefore, it is important to process the answer from the heart using the rational mind.

Ask yourself if the answer makes sense. If there are any practical blocks or further information you need that prevents you from acting on the answer coming from your heart.

Evaluate whether the answers you’ve received when placed in your heart center and your rational mind are in alignment. If not, repeat the process until they are. If you become stuck, ask your Higher Self what the root cause of this discordance is; this may help reveal the answers or strategies you need to achieve that consensus.

Trusting the answers that we receive from our Higher Self means trusting that we have always contained the knowledge and wisdom we seek.

Learning to truly trust ourselves with these important questions when we have never done so before is one of the most difficult and rewarding parts of this practice.

When you feel that you are ready to end the conversation, thank your Higher Self and open your eyes.

Resources to Help You Connect to Your Higher Self

Connecting to the Higher Self takes practice. For those just beginning on this journey, the following resources may help to establish those first few connections.

Method 1: Video Walk-Through Demonstrations

Method 2: Guided Meditations

The House Exercise

Close your eyes and feel your whole body relaxing. First, your feet are going to relax, then your legs, your thighs, your stomach, chest, shoulders and arms, your neck and head. Now your whole body is feeling relaxed. Take some deep breaths and center yourself by linking with your heart chakra, which is located in the center of your chest.

With each breath feel the cares of the day dissolving into nothing and try to let go of any thoughts and feelings. Imagine you are sitting in your home meditating. The doorbell rings and you go to the door and open it. On the other side is your Higher Self. It enters and sits down across from you.

When you feel you are experiencing It, imagine the sun shining down on It and notice if It changes. If It stays the same or gets brighter, then It is your Higher Self. If it disappears or gets dark, tell it to leave, and try the exercise again. When you feel connected, ask the Higher Self questions that can be answered with a signal for a “yes” answer, a “no” answer, or a “maybe” answer.

When you feel ready to end the conversation, ask the Higher Self if It has anything else it needs to tell you. Listen to Its answer, which may take the form of actual words, thoughts, or impressions. Then thank your Higher Self and write down everything that has happened.
